Salesforce has renamed its marketing products so many times that two of them are now separated by a single word: Marketing Cloud Engagement and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement are different platforms with nearly identical names. If you have lost track of what is called what, you are not alone. This is the full lineage, from ExactTarget and Pardot through the 2022 rebrand to the 2026 names, and a plain explanation of why it keeps changing and what to actually call things today.
This guide is deliberately a reference. Bookmark it, because the two product families it covers, the B2C messaging platform and the B2B automation platform, are both easy to confuse thanks to the shared “Marketing Cloud” branding. We keep separate deep-dives for each: Salesforce Marketing Cloud (Engagement) and Pardot (Account Engagement). This page is the map that connects them.
The two lineages
Almost all of the confusion comes from the fact that Salesforce built its marketing portfolio from two separate acquisitions and later gave them matching names.
Lineage one: ExactTarget, the B2C messaging platform
- ExactTarget was an email and cross-channel messaging company that Salesforce acquired in 2013.
- It became Salesforce Marketing Cloud, the umbrella most people still say today.
- In the 2022 portfolio rebrand it was officially renamed Marketing Cloud Engagement. Same Email Studio, Journey Builder, and Automation Studio underneath.
Lineage two: Pardot, the B2B automation platform
- Pardot was a B2B marketing automation company. It came to Salesforce through the ExactTarget acquisition and continued under its own name for years.
- In the same 2022 rebrand it was renamed Marketing Cloud Account Engagement. Buyers, notably, still overwhelmingly call it Pardot.
That 2022 rebrand is the origin of the great collision: the B2C platform became “Marketing Cloud Engagement” and the B2B platform became “Marketing Cloud Account Engagement.” One word, “Account,” separates two products that share almost nothing technically.
The newer generation, and the components that got renamed
On top of the two lineages, Salesforce has since introduced a newer generation and renamed several supporting pieces:
- Marketing Cloud Growth and Marketing Cloud Advanced are editions built natively on the Salesforce core platform and Data Cloud, distinct from the classic Engagement stack.
- Marketing Cloud Next is the AI-native rebuild those editions lead toward, with Agentforce built in.
- Interaction Studio (itself formerly Evergage) became Marketing Cloud Personalization.
- Datorama became Marketing Cloud Intelligence.
- Social Studio was retired.
- Most recently, Salesforce has begun presenting its clouds under an Agentforce banner, so you will see “Agentforce Marketing” used as an umbrella. Treat it as a marketing brand layered on top; the product-level name in the docs and certifications is still Marketing Cloud Engagement.
What to call things today: a cheat sheet
- The B2C email and journeys platform (formerly ExactTarget): Marketing Cloud Engagement. Buyers say “Salesforce Marketing Cloud” or “SFMC.”
- The B2B automation platform (formerly Pardot): Marketing Cloud Account Engagement. Buyers say “Pardot.”
- The newer core-platform generation: Marketing Cloud Growth and Advanced editions, leading to Marketing Cloud Next.
- Personalization (formerly Interaction Studio) and Intelligence (formerly Datorama) are supporting products.
- Agentforce Marketing is the current umbrella branding, not a separate product you buy instead of the above.
Why it keeps changing, and why it matters
The renames are mostly Salesforce unifying acquired products under a single “Marketing Cloud” brand, and more recently signaling its shift to a core-platform, Data Cloud, and Agentforce architecture. The intent is coherence. The effect, for buyers, is the opposite: procurement teams buy the wrong SKU, job descriptions ask for the wrong platform, and vendors talk past each other because “Marketing Cloud” means different things to different people. The practical cost of the naming is real, and it is why getting the vocabulary straight before a project or a hire saves genuine time and money.
No. They are different products with almost identical names, both renamed in the 2022 Salesforce rebrand. Marketing Cloud Engagement is the ExactTarget-lineage B2C messaging platform. Marketing Cloud Account Engagement is the product formerly called Pardot, a B2B automation platform. The word “Account” is the only thing separating the names, and they share almost nothing technically.
ExactTarget became Salesforce Marketing Cloud after the 2013 acquisition, then Marketing Cloud Engagement in the 2022 portfolio rebrand. The underlying Email Studio, Journey Builder, and Automation Studio are still the core of the same product.
Pardot was renamed Marketing Cloud Account Engagement in the 2022 rebrand. In practice, buyers and practitioners still overwhelmingly call it Pardot, and it remains a distinct B2B marketing automation product.
It is Salesforce’s current umbrella branding for its marketing AI and products, introduced as part of the broader Agentforce push. It is a brand layered on top rather than a separate product you buy instead of Marketing Cloud Engagement. The product-level names in documentation and certifications still use “Marketing Cloud Engagement.”
